Our Story

Come as you are.You will be known here.

We are a church in Lexington, Alabama that exists to glorify God by making disciples who love Him, love others, and serve our community.

About Mt. Pleasant

Deep roots.A heart for our community.

Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church has been part of Lexington, Alabama for generations.

We believe the Bible is God’s Word, that Jesus Christ is the only Savior, and that the church is God’s plan to reach the world through the good news of the Gospel.

What We Believe
The painted mural behind the pulpit in the sanctuary: a river valley beneath sunbeams with a white dove in flight, framed in stone between two lanterns
The Mt. Pleasant sign on County Road 71, reading “Do you fellowship with God, or do you fellowship with others about God?”
The church at dusk, its lit sign reading “Faith, hope & love, but the greatest of these is love”

Our Mission

To know Jesus Christ, to grow together as a church family, and to make Him known in Lexington and beyond.

Our Journey

Faithful then.Faithful now.

A congregation on this ridge since 1854 — four buildings, three mission churches, and generations of ordinary people keeping at it.

  1. 1854 Thirty-one Charter Members Established 30 November 1854 in a newly built residence on Highway 101. Murrell Askew assisted and is the first recorded pastor.
  2. 1905 The Ridge on County Road 71 A tent revival was held at the present site. The Steth Williams family gave the land for the church and the cemetery, and a white wooden building followed.
  3. Today A Living Church The sanctuary built in 1967, with the fellowship space of 1987 and the Family Life Center of 2005 around it.
  4. Looking Ahead For His Glory We trust God with what comes next, and mean to keep doing the same things: preach the Word, love this community, and make Him known.

From our history

Four buildings, and a good deal in between

Where we have met

  • 1854 — established in a newly constructed residence on Highway 101, Lexington, with 31 charter members.
  • 1875 — a meeting house at McClure Springs, two miles south of Lexington near Mill Creek, on land given by J. M. McClure. Forty feet by twenty-five, and small enough that people called it “Old Scrouge Out”. The creek there was used for baptizing for many years. The building was later moved to County Road 104, remodelled, and lived in as a residence.
  • 1905 — a tent revival at the present site on County Road 71. A large white wooden building followed, with support columns inside used to hold lamps and to hang coats and hats.
  • 1948 — a block-and-concrete building replaced the wooden one. Educational space was added in the 1950s, the present sanctuary was built in 1967, further education and fellowship facilities in 1987, and the Family Life Center in 2005.

Churches we helped begin

  • 1859 — Salem, at Kingtown about four miles south of Lexington, begun with 15 members from Mt. Pleasant.
  • 1936 — a work about eight miles south-east of Lexington that met first in a brush arbour, and became New Hope Baptist Church on County Road 76.
  • Late 1950s — a work in the Springfield community about six miles south, which became Springfield First Baptist Church.

The ground around us

  • Williams School stood next to the church property at the corner of County Road 71 and County Road 478, and operated from the 1890s until the early 1940s.
  • Mt. Pleasant Cemetery lies behind the church on land given by Steth Williams, who in 1921 was the first person buried there. It was enlarged in 1984 with property bought from the sale of the Williams estate.
  • U.S. Army SP4 Don Leslie Michael, a Medal of Honor recipient, is buried here. He was born in Lexington on 31 July 1947 and died on 8 April 1967, aged nineteen.
